Promoting Your Business With a Facebook Page

Facebook is the new in thing and it looks like it's here to stay. These days everyone, and I mean everyone from your mom, your grandma, my dog, and my friend's 10 year old has a Facebook account. There is no avoiding it - Facebook is a tool that you should be using. Whether for personal or business use, it's time to modernize a little bit. Today let's discuss a Facebook page for your business.
Groups vs. Business Page
You must first have a personal Facebook account in order to do anything. Assuming you have at least this now you can set up either a group or a Facebook fan page. A group on Facebook is a little limited in that it can only send emails blasts to 5,000 people tops. It is also personal in that if you set up a group you are the known administrator of that group and people from the group can contact you directly. Additionally when you set up a group, anyone can write on the wall, but what you write won't be seen in your member's newsfeed stream. The way to send the whole group a message is via the Facebook messages.
A business page on the other hand is what many businesses are turning to. This can be set up and the administrators aren't known to the people who "like" the page. You as the administrator can post to the page wall and what you write will go to everyone's newsfeed that likes your page. There are also tabs and applications that you can set up on your business page to better showcase your business and interact with your fans.
Facebook Page Design
Anyone can set up a Facebook page. Simply go to the Create a Page ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php ) section on Facebook to get started. Initially your page won't look like much - it's what you do with it that counts as far as how beneficial it will be to your business. Some things that you should do immediately on your Facebook for business page are to upload your logo as your picture for instant brand recognition and to fill out the information section completely, including a link to your business website.
To spruce up your Facebook page even more, the site has a program called Static FBML ( http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=4949752878&b#!/apps/application.php?id=4949752878&v=info ). By adding this to your page you can use HTML or Facebook Markup Language (FBML) to completely customize your page. It is important to note that if you don't have HTML or FBML knowledge, this may be tricky for you to learn to use. In this case, working with a design service that has Facebook knowledge will help you get many extras such as custom tabs and applications set up without too much extra cost to you. Plus working with a design service will give your Facebook page a professional and unique feel without you putting in a lot of extra time and energy.
